Botswana –A Masopher Investment Analysis
Botswana. A country about the size of Texas with a people the size of 1/3 of London and over a third of those people stricken with HIV and AIDS, churning out a substantial portion of the world’s diamonds is a country, not surprisingly, without turmoil. The country has a lot of land, a lot of “free” wealth, and very few people to share it with. The nepotism in the leadership, the displacement of a few tribes, the destruction of wild life preserves is of little concern because the laws of the land don’t object to it even if a few bleeding heart NGOs do. Masopher recommends this country as a valuable African investment opportunity. Having spent its entire life as an exploited resource country, there is no large production of goods, no large manufacturing sector, minimal service industry and a wealthy central bank. The government is happy to be filled with administrators and managers of the highest caliber. Botswana is so focused on the diamond trade that a wise investor who wants to do anything but diamonds can literally set up shop and be set for life. Geologists also hint that other exploitable resources are available and untapped.
Neighboring South Africa, poses little politico-military threat nor does the suffering Zimbabwe which is noticeably ignored, the only issue recognized is the Khalahari desert which maybe creeping eastwards over the land and Namibia on the other side of the desert. Namibia itself is a desert and replete with both diamonds and AIDS. Namibia also has a Muslim population and “freedom fighters” which inherently cause a minor elevation of threat levels. Conversely this female dominated government has little interest in power broking or expansionism. The Batswana government is noted as “very eager” to attract foreign ventures and the economic and legislative environment is progressively being made more conducive. ALL SAID; Botswana could be classed as a large well managed diamond mine with a desert in its backdrop. Businesses looking to facilitate the miners and administration (which encapsulates the government) will thrive.
